Hailing from Budapest, Hungary and taking cues from the rock & roll of the 80's and 90's, The Sick Unicorn released their new, all-acoustic record which harkens back to one of the era's more iconic shows, MTV Unplugged. The 8-song album, simply entitled Unplugged, boasts reworked versions of previously released songs and a couple new ones as well.
Formed in 2019 in a basement in Kispest, the band was founded by four guys disillusioned with math metal and eager to pursue a more straighforward, raw and primal sound. The lineup matches that of rock history's greatest foursomes. Frontman Shuey was destined for his role not by singing lessons but by his onstage charisma and nearly 5 octave range; axeman Big Rob is the mastermind of riffs, solos and The Sick Unicorn sound itself; while the rhythm section of Danny Kid on bass and Afghan on drums provides plenty of grooves.
The band released their debut album, Unleashed, in April 2020 on Hunnia Records, a response to the worldwide corona crisis. In addition to the fast, enraged anthems--mostly written in English--the acoustic stylings were already present then and there as a bonus. Now, a year after the decidedly not-so-radio-friendly debut, Unplugged serves as a peace offering that will introduce the sinister melodies to new, unsuspecting listeners. To beef up the thrilling, blues and swing infused adaptations with an even richer and fuller sound, the band recruited close friend Dániel Gulyás as a second guitarist for this record. Over the course of the spring, several of the new songs will have accompanying videos, filmed at the renowned SuperSize Studio.
